Self-soothing is a skill that allows us to calm down when we are in distress. We each have the ability to tap into this skill, but like any other skill in life we must put it to use. The more we practice the skill, the better we get at using it when we most need it.

A simple exercise you can do is to think of your five senses (smell, sight, taste, touch, sound) and come up with things that you can do to calm down when you are in distress. It can be anything from a warm bubble bath, to watching your favorite movie, or working on a puzzle. I would greatly encourage you to personalize this activity and really get to know (if you don't know already) what brings you comfort.
