Assertive communication is the ability to stand up for your own wants, the first thing needs while respecting the needs of others. It differs from aggressive communication in that it does not violate the needs of others in order to meet their own.
When communicating assertively you want to make sure you: * Clearly state your needs * Maintain good eye contact * Listen to others without interrupting * Steady tone of voice * Confident body language
Here are a few skills that you can implement to assist you in being more assertive: * I statements - usmg I instead of you when addressing an issue. * Active listening: observe mom verbal message, indicate you understand, and seek clarification if you don't (see last week post) * Broken record - calm repetition * Fogging- acknowledge the critic but remain the judge of your choice of action. * Negative assertion: accept your errors or faults but not apologize. Example “Yes you are right I don't always listen closely to what you have to say.”
